Last week I’ve attended seminar retreat penyediaan kemudahan OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) kat Seri Pacific Hotel, not as participant but as a facilitator..haha, cam a bit weird sebab slalunyer jadi fasi untuk event2 cam architectural workshop ke orientation week ke time kat uni dulu..this time kene jadi fasi untuk group org2 dewasa (Jabatan Arkitek, Building Surveyor, Town Planner..semua jabatan teknikal from DBKL la)..nervous pun ader gak..takut kene soal lebih2 ngan ahli group pastu tak tau nk jawab ape..tp, alhamdulillah.everything went just fine :)
Program ni adelah anjuran DBKL, in conjunction with UIA. Ar. Dr. Asiah (my lecturer cum my boss was invited to deliver speeches at the seminar) I was there with my few other colleagues for the whole 3 days learning what is access audit..For those who are still not familiar with the word ‘access audit’, it has nothing to do with the auditing work in accountancy (haha..since nadia already confused, I’m thinking of explaining it lil’ bit here..dont worry nad..it still something gotta do with architecture, tak kacau u all punyer periuk nasi la..hehe)
Access audit tu maksudnye to assess the accessibility in the built environment..whether inside or outside building. The outcome of the access audit will then determine to what extent the facilities for the disabled have been complied in the design. In fact, kalau ada mana² requirement yang tak comply, contohnye takde railing dkt ramp ataupun takde guiding block untuk orang buta kat laluan yang penting, so lepas access audit dibuat, benda2 yang takde tadi tu kene diadakan untuk kemudahan golongan OKU nih.. ..(hope this explanation is not so technical..i’m trying to describe it as simple as it can be understood)
So, hari kedua seminar, kitorang pun bergerak la dlm kumpulan ke tempat2 yg telah ditentukan.. Alltogether ada 7 group..Kalau korang perasan, adelah masuk dlm paper last week hari Khamis..tapi tempat2 yang ade press cuma kat KL Sentral ngan Jalan TAR je..me and my group went to Institut Sosial Malaysia (ISM) kat Sg. Besi..so, takdelah sesi diinterview oleh wartawan..huhu. Kat bawah ni adelah gambar contoh bagaimana seseorang yang normal tu dibutakan untuk mengalami sendiri perasaan bagaimana susahnya menjadi orang buta. This lady tengah menggagau nak cari pintu masuk..

Selain daripada buta, semua org pun kene experience using the wheelchair.Haa..then baru diorg akan realize ramp yang diprovide tu, gradient dia betul ke tak. Sometimes, ramps are provided just for the sake of having it..tapi tak praktikal. Wheelchair users nak wheel up the ramp pun susah..sebab steep sangat..Talking about this access audit, actually I’ve done it for my research during my fourth year studies. Research title was “Accessible Shopping Complex”- which i’ve been to Alamanda and Suria KLCC for the case studies.
This is one of not so good example at Alamanda, Putrajaya coz wheelchair cannot enter the main entrance from the parking at the roof top.Tak tau la sekarang ni diorg dah provide ramp ke belum.. during this time, it has already opened for public, tp belum officially launched..mase pegi tu, food court dia pun tak siap lagi.
Main entrance at Ground Floor bagus..sebab takde drop dan pintu yang digunakan is automatic door. Easy access for everyone; same goes to KLCC.
Bukan takat access kat luar2 je..access into the toilet pun kene tengok..Alamanda punye disabled toilet mmg sgt2 perfect..takde masalah..kalau yang bermasalah tu contohnye, ade floor drop more than 1 inch kat pintu..so, wheelchair susah nak keluar balik dari toilet, ataupun ruang toilet yang sgt sempit, not enough space for the wheelchair to maneuver, height WC yang terlalu rendah, space for feet not provided under the sink ..etc.
Hehe..yg ni gambar kat Picnic KLCC..Time g KLCC ni terasa a bit awkward la..sebab ramai org (compared to Alamanda)..boleh rase la, org sumer pandang..(Pandangan simpati) My friend yang tolong tolak wheelchair siap ckp “Mesti diorg tgk ko pk ..kesian budak nih, muda2 dah cacat..” ceit, tak gune btul..tp maybe betul gak orang pk centu kan.. Bila lalu kat crowd, orang akan bagi laluan..pastu kat supermarket, ada yang even offer nak tolong angkatkan barang ape yang kita nak ambil..somehow, Malaysians are good citizen :)..But 1 thing that I couldn’t forget was my friend’s reaction when he saw me sitting on the wheelchair (mase kat picnic nih..) he used to be my studio mate; an Iraqi..nampak la air muka dia terus berubah.. “Sister Faizah, what happened to you?”..hihi, and I have to explain to him, that we were conducting a simulation for my research..hehe, lepas tu baru nampak muke dia lega..he thought that I got into accident or something, pastu ader masalah tak boleh jalan ke ape ke…huhuhu, mintak dijauhkan la..
Anyway, back to the seminar story, satu lagi experience yg seronok mase seminar ni ialah dapat belajar bahasa isyarat orang pekak..Among the sign that I can still remember- Selamat pagi, terima kasih, sama-sama, saya cantik..(ni diorg yang ajar eh), arkitek, doctor, adala lagi..blh dikatakan senang je sbnanyer bahasa isyarat nih.. kalau dok seminggu dgn diorg mesti leh expert punyer..:p
K-la, rase cam panjang sgt plak entri kali ni..ter’excited’ la plak citer pasal Access Audit nih..kuikuikui
